Hospital Cross
St. Ruprecht an der RaabLocated at the northern exit of the village, at the fork in the road between Weiz and Mitterdorf, is the “Spitalkreuz”, a street chapel.
The stately wayside shrine contains a group of crosses, which is attributed to the Graz sculptor Marx Schokotnigg. The cross group shows a crucified Christ, Mary, Mary Magdalene and John the Evangelist. The life-size, three-dimensional group is enriched with baroque fresco depictions.
The group of crosses is linked to the painted representations to form a meaningful iconological program. The hospital cross was made between 1712 and 1714 and is also the starting point for the Calvary from Sankt Ruprecht an der Raab towards Breitegg - the so-called Breiteggerweg. This leads beautifully along Breiteggerstrasse to the Breitegg Church, which you should definitely visit. You can follow the hiking trail back or take a walk along the Unterfladnitz Way of the Cross.
