Etappe 4 Mariazeller Gründerweg

From Mautern in Liesingtal via the Trofaiach basin and the Krumpengraben to the Hirnalm and via the Barbarakreuz to Vordernberg.
With the municipalities of Mautern and Kammern, we get to know the Liesingtal with its attractive local recreational trails (Rittersteig, Marterlweg) and part of the long-distance hiking trail “Styrian Iron Trail”. The paths from Mautern to Kammern are varied and surprise with natural and scenic spots, historic buildings and a cave chapel. With views of the peaks of the Seckauer Tauern to the east and the mighty Reiting mountain range to the north, we make a pilgrimage from place to place along cultivated agricultural land. On the northern edge of the town of Trofaiach, the pilgrimage route leads over the Krumpengraben to the idyllically situated Hirnalm. In Vordernberg, we reach the former center of ironworks in the Habsburg Empire and our destination for today.

Route description:
From the monastery or the center in Mautern (712 m) we walk uphill via the Eselsbergweg through the populated area. Along meadow and forest paths, the trail climbs steadily uphill to a high fence crossing (1140 m). We follow the Rittersteig, an easily accessible path that leads through steep, rocky and wooded terrain. We reach the highest point of this stage on the Rittersteig at approx. 1250 meters before continuing downhill (very steep in places) to the grotto and the Kammerstein ruins. At Kammern im Liesingtal (664 m) we reach the valley floor again. In the center we keep left uphill and walk along the Kalvarienbergweg and continue on the natural panorama and Marterlweg to Dirnsdorf. On side roads with little traffic, we walk towards Kaisertal and the next 9 kilometers in constant ups and downs via Mochl (762 m), Schardorf, Putzenberg, Gimplach and Kurzheim (702 m) to Hafning (in the north of Trofaiach). We follow the Krumpenbach approx. 5 kilometers into the valley and walk uphill via the Hirnalm (934 m) to the Barbarakreuz (1058 m), before finally heading downhill to Vordernberg (839 m).
If the stage is too long for one day, the route can be split in Schardorf; overnight accommodation is available at the Landhotel Reitingblick (www.stegmueller.at). This means 16 kilometers for the first part and 14.2 kilometers to Vordernberg.
Mautern and Kalwang can be reached by train and bus.
