Tauern Tour
The Tauern Tour" starts in the Mur valley, leads us over the Niedere Tauern over the Enns valley and then back over the Sölk pass to Tamsweg, back over Murau and St. Lambrecht. The "Tauern Tour" and offers a varied and partly little used route for friends of mountain routes.
We start at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg in the direction of Fohnsdorf, continue via Pöls, Oberkurzheim to Hohentauern. At the top of the pass (1.274m) you can take a break, e.g. in the pile dwelling village at the water or a short walk.
We continue on to Trieben, where we follow the main road in the direction of Rottenmann - for vintage car fans there is a reason to stop here - because in Strechau Castle we find an extraordinary collection of Steyr vintage cars. The tour continues over the western Enns Valley past Aigen and Öblarn, then we continue towards Sölkpass.
The winding route soon shows its beauty of the Niedere Tauern, which we cross for the second time today. Depending on the weather, the pass may be closed until May.
Our tour continues on to Schöder and Krakaudorf - here you should definitely make a stop at the Günster waterfall. With a drop of 65 meters it is the highest waterfall in Styria - here about 300 liters of water per second fall over smooth rocks.
The route continues via Tamsweg, Ramingstein via stadl an der Mur to Murau. Who stops in this district town should taste the probably most famous product of the town - the Murauer beer - of course best the alcohol-free herbal cyclist. A visit to the newly rebuilt Murau experimental and show distillery is also a chance to learn more about this traditional beer.
Attention we do not continue on the main road but turn off towards St. Lambrecht - here the impressive monastery has influenced the history of the region. We continue via Teufenbach and Scheifling via Judenburg back to Spielberg.
If you still feel like taking a few meters of altitude difference, you can drive to St. Lambrecht in the direction of Neumarkt and "take" the Perchauer Sattel (995m).
Back to the Red Bull Ring where we can take a 90-minute tour (reservation required) which is normally closed to visitors.
