I am a Murtaler - the big Bösenstein

  • 2 minutes of reading time
At 2448 metres above sea level, the Große Bösenstein is the highest peak in the Murtal region. Don't let the name mislead you, it is by no means bad, but gives you a stunning view and an impressive hiking experience.

The highest point in the Murtal

The Bösenstein is the central point of the Rottenmanner Tauern. It magnetically attracts summit strikers. Here you will find one of the 7 Heavenly Places in Hohentauern, which will definitely bring you a bit closer to heaven. The hikes range from a short but crisp 4 kilometres to an extensive 8 kilometres. There is even a fairy tale about the Bösenstein and a fairy tale trail that starts at the Edelrautenhütte takes you on the trail of gnomes, water sprites and rock figures.

A worthwhile alternative to the big Bösenstein is its little brother - the small Bösenstein. At 2396 metres, it also offers a fantastic view and a wonderful summit experience.

The Bösenstein in the Interview

Murtal Region: "What connects you to the Murtal?"

Großer Bösenstein: "I feel a bit like the big boss of this beautiful region. I'm the biggest here and really look over the whole region."

Murtal Region: "When do you feel the heartbeat in the Murtal?"

Großer Bösenstein: "When summit strikers reach my peak and are really happy, it's an indescribable feeling for me too. The hikers usually sit on my summit, puffing a bit, and let the fresh wind blow around their noses. But you can be really proud."

Murtal Region: "Where is your favourite place in the Murtal?"

Großer Bösenstein: "Hohentauern, here I am a bit closer to heaven."

If you want to explore the Bösenstein even now, you have to be quick. It is usually the first in the Murtal to cover its head in a thick blanket of snow.
