Hiking stick (Wanderstab) / St. Stefan-Mureck

The hiking stick is a symbolic designation, the path leads along the long-distance hiking trail no. 790.
If we look at the long-distance hiking trail network "On the Trail of the Volcanoes" on the hiking map, there is a human, our so-called fire creature, depicted in the landscape and look at us. It invites us to hike the entire area. In St. Stefan im Rosental, the right hand touches the hiking stick, which leads over a beautiful hillock trail with great vantage points over Jagerberg, Oberrosenberg to Weinburg and then very flat into the floodplain area of the border river Mur. On the Slovenian side, you can hike directly over the Mureck border bridge on the marked Marienweg. A strenuous day's stage, you really need a hiking stick or Nordic walking poles as a supplement. An overnight stay in Jagerberg and a split over 2 stages gives the chance to experience the landscape in a relaxed way.

More information

Detailed information on how to get there can be found here.
In St. Stefan at the car park in front of the Kindererlebniswelt (children's adventure world), we pass the swimming pool, cross the Saßbach (often described as the Saßbachtal) and then past the Buschenschank Nagl through the vineyards to the beautifully situated Schichenau Marienkapelle (Lady Chapel), where we already have a wide view to the south of a good part of our trail. After another, but now flatter ascent, we have finally reached the ridge. At the junction we turn right and from now on stay on the ridge between Saßtal and Ottersbachtal, which leads us towards Mureck.

With beautiful views of Lichtenegg (on the left) and Glojach on the right, we now hike along the varied path. After the forest section, we cross the road from St. Stefan to Gnas, to overcome a short but steep ascent a little later, which leads us to a wonderful spot. Past the Lang wine farm, we descend again and hike once past farmsteads, then again on the open path, via the Sandleitenweg and Jahrbach Bergweg to the Buschenschank Eder-Stererbauer.

A beautiful view of the Jagerberg church opens up. Starting from the village centre, there is the Johannisweg with the Rinnquelle spring and the Notburga circular path. Her statue is depicted at the stairway to the church with the attribute of the sickle and the ears of corn. Out of Jagerberg, the houses accompany us for a while, between which we repeatedly see the two volcanoes - the double peak of the Gleichenberg and the elongated ridge of the Stradner Kogel. We pass the Zehendorfberg chapel via forest sections. We cross the road from Mettersdorf to St. Peter and walk over the Oberrosenberg. At the Rosenberg chapel, the view opens up far into Slovenia as well as to the Koralm and Gleinalm. It is worth taking a break at the nearby typical Berglermühle wine tavern (Fri - Sun) or at the Ploder organic winery.

The landscape slopes southwards into the Murtal valley. The path descends gently between the vineyards, the ridge becomes lower and through the Weinburg forest we reach Weinburg Castle. The last stretch is accompanied by a very well-kept cross path. The path continues flat to Oberrakitsch. Past the well-known Sixt kernel oil mill and the Schwaben ponds, where herons can often be seen. Before the village of Eichfeld, we turn right off the main road and pass the large bioenergy plant to Mureck railway station. Under the motto "The sun doesn't send us a bill", much is made here about the use of bioenergy. Via the main square we reach the town hall tower. On its interior and exterior are 16 stone reliefs from the 16th century, juxtaposing ancient mythology and scenes from the Old Testament with those of the New Testament. Through the town gate we reach the organic food shop and go directly to the ship mill on the Mura. The water ether of the Mur can be sensed on the Au Experience Trail connected here. We are in the middle of the 2nd largest floodplain area in Austria.

Take a break at one of the many different places to stop and discover the culinary diversity of Styria's Thermal & Volcanic Land!
