Snowshoe hike on Plankogel, Sommeralm
Closed
A snowshoe tour up to one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the
Almenland Nature Park in Styria.
The Plankogel offers a wonderful panoramic view, far beyond the borders of the Almenland Nature Park.
The tour starts at the Stoakoglhütte on the Sommeralm, where there are also parking spaces. Snowshoes can also be borrowed here. The first part of the path leads gently downhill through the forest until you reach the first viewpoint. Now keep left and go up to the wind turbine. If you want, you can also visit the Sommeralm chapel on the tour, which is located directly on the main road L355. Then follow the road up to the summit cross. Here you have probably the most beautiful 360 degree view of the surrounding alpine pastures and far beyond. From the summit you can see the Stoakoglhütte again, to which you then end the tour quite steeply downhill.

More information
Start:
Stoakoglhütte, 8172 Sommeralm 122
- Starting from the parking lot at the Stoakoglhütte, we follow the arrow “Circular path around the Plankogel” (path no. 8).
- The path begins to climb continuously at a small hunting lodge and after about 30 minutes we reach the first viewpoints.
- At a crossroads (to the right we go towards Teichalm) we keep left and continue until we reach the “Kerschbaumgatterl”.
- From the “Kerschbaumgatterl” path no. 730/745 up to the wind turbine on the Sommeralm.
- If you want to visit the Sommeralm chapel, walk down from the wind turbine towards the main road (L355). The chapel is located directly on the main street, behind the ehm. Gasthaus Derler (end of the parking spaces).
- If you don't want to make a detour to the chapel, turn left just before the wind turbine (according to the marking) to the Plankogel summit, which we reach after about 20 minutes.
- From the summit cross we descend directly to the Stoakoglhütte below (short but steep descent).
Alternative:
- If you want to avoid the steep descent, go back towards the wind turbine and then continue comfortably above the Sommeralmstraße to the Stoakoglhütte (path no. 745).
If you would like to trudge a little longer through the snow, you can extend the route to the “Siebenkögel circular route”. This is also ideal for snowshoes.
