Murau Castle, owned by the Schwarzenberg family, towers above the town of Murau. The castle can only be visited as part of the guided tours offered. First mentioned in 1250, the castle in Murau was probably built by Ulrich von Liechtenstein.
The dominion of Murau was owned by the Liechtenstein family for a long time and remained in the possession of the widow Anna Neumann von Wasserleonburg after the family died out. Anna Neumann married in 1617 in sixth marriage the imperial count Georg Ludwig zu Schwarzenberg. Georg Ludwig had the castle demolished in 1628 and built the Renaissance castle in its present form. Since then, the Schwarzenbergs have been the owners of the dominion of Murau.
The guided tours of the castle, which also include a visit to the painting gallery, kitchen, dungeon and chapel, provide an impression of life behind the castle gates and the history of the lordship and castle of Murau and the House of Schwarzenberg.
