The Murau handicraft museum preserves the cultural history of the city and the district and preserves cultural assets for posterity. As part of guided tours, in which we focus on the interests of the visitors, the development of handicrafts and trade is made understandable and connected with the stories of people. Guided tours are possible that can last either 2 hours or 30 minutes. In addition to the partial redesign of the permanent exhibition, special exhibitions are being designed.

Knowledge, competence and techniques are passed on to museum visitors of all ages in the form of lectures, workshops, exhibitions and narrative coffees. One focus is doing it yourself, another is the development of new uses for old cultural techniques in cooperation with artists. The thematic beginning is devoted to the focus “textiles”. An area that historically played an important role in the national economy and visualized many of the cultural peculiarities of the city and its surroundings.

History of the museum
The first attempt to found a regional museum in Murau was made in 1926 by the then City Office Director Friedrich Zelburg. Only the contents of a showcase remained from his initiative. The actual implementation was achieved in 1950 by the pharmacist Mag. Ernst Gasteiger. He collected objects from the past from the area and exposed them in his house. In 1952 he placed his collection in the Joanneum in Graz and donated it to the municipality of Murau a year later. In 1970 the local history museum moved to the so-called "Eggharthaus" in Anna-Neumann Straße No. 12, where it was reopened in 1971. In 1975 the “City and Handicraft Museum” moved to the former Capuchin monastery in Murau. Since 1999, the Association for the Promotion of the Murau Handicraft Museum has been organizing the preservation, collection and operation of the museum and regulating the basis for further developments.
