Exhibition "Ambivalences" in Fehring
FehringThe exhibition "Ambivalenzen" features 10 artists from Styria, providing insight into the diversity of contemporary art productions.
The term ambivalence accounts for the possibility of assigning an object to more than one category. We classify our environment, which gives it structure, yet sometimes our classifications prove inadequate, and our patterns are insufficient to do justice to the ambiguity of objects. In the exhibition "Ambivalenzen" , five sculptors are showcased, who could be designated as "white old men" in accordance with the current zeitgeist and who might even be assumed to represent a classical concept of sculpture.
On the walls, however, one can see five emerging female painters, who explore the medium with feminist fervor and question art history. But is it really that straightforward? In a time when society is increasingly classifying once again, which always implies inclusion and exclusion, art demonstrates that nothing is truly unambiguous, that it is worthwhile to take a second look, to look beneath the surface, and to grasp objects in their ambiguity and respective context.
