The increased heavy rainfall due to climate change is causing a change in the bed load of the Feistritz River, which is silting up the FRANZKANAL. Its now annually recurring uncovering not only defies the silting up - it is more than a symbolic rebellion against the increasing constriction of public space - the island building represents the reversal of settling in a building. The MARIAINSEL is therefore neither a place of escape nor a place of retreat, and certainly not a private space.
Properly understood, island building is about placing an environment in an existing one. This gave the town of Fürstenfeld a new district, its own PROVINCE, in administrative terms a territory in which the prescribed norms are only partially or not fully implemented, and where its own rules of culture can function.”
