"right from the start…". The opening concert of the 10. big.band.festivals 2025!
As in the previous year, we are pleased to present three regional big bands in a concert at this year's big.band.festival :
The festival opens this time with the Big Band of the Mureck Music School, “Swinging Uferlos”. It mainly consists of students from the Mureck Music School. Teachers or graduates of the music school also support the Big Band in vacant positions as needed. The goal of this school big band is to familiarize the students with the wide range of big band music, from swing to Latin and pop and rock, or to learn to interpret it stylistically correctly.
The leadership of this ensemble is held by none other than Günther Pendl, who, together with Wolfgang Schiefer, created the first big.band.workshop in Bad Radkersburg in 2011.
The second band of the evening will be the
“JugendJazzOrchester Steiermark” performing.

This orchestra is offered as a university course at the University of the Arts Graz. Jazz-enthusiastic musicians aged 14 to 22 not only get the opportunity to make music, rehearse, and perform in a professional setting, but also receive top-notch foundational training in big band and jazz. However, the focus of the JugendJazzOrchester Steiermark is on the fun of the matter: the joy of music – of the rich sound, of cool grooves – and of making music together.

The closing act of the opening night will be the “Big Band West”, the jazz orchestra from West Styria!
The ensemble was founded 38 years ago by the director of the Deutschlandsberg Music School, Prof. Josef Rupp, and was subsequently continued by the trombonist Hansjörg Arndt and has been organized by Elmar Berger since 2015. The Big Band features musicians from across West Styria and performs pieces by composers and arrangers from the region. Stylistically diverse – everything from “Count Basie style” to contemporary tonal language to popular music approaches is included.
