Grazertor (Neues Rathaus)
FürstenfeldThe Grazertor was built in 1565 and was part of the city's fortifications. Until 1857 it was a military hospital. It was rebuilt in 1776 and 1859 and housed the city theatre until 1945. In 1945 the building was badly damaged, and it was rebuilt in 1949 on the foundations of the first Graz Gate, but without the theatre. Works by Prof. Fritz Silberbauer in the interior of the town hall date from this construction phase. The large fresco painting in the meeting room, a door frame in the registry office and the design for two glass windows in the staircase and in the meeting room are all by the artist.
Among the numerous works of art on display in the town hall are paintings by the most important Fürstenfeld artist, the painter and graphic artist Karl Mader (1884-1952).
