The Almgraben Loop is a scenic and varied mountain bike tour in the Ausseerland region, leading from Bad Mitterndorf to the idyllic Steinitzenalm alpine pasture region. This tour offers perfect conditions for recreational cyclists, leisure seekers, and active sports enthusiasts who enjoy e-biking off-road or simply want to experience nature on two wheels.
The starting point is the municipal office in Bad Mitterndorf. From there, the route leads westward through a narrow passage and then branches off to the left towards Heilbrunn. At the “Kragl” junction, the ascending Almgrabenstraße begins behind a cattle grid and leads continuously uphill.
Once at the top, it is worth making a detour to Bernadette's rustic inn on the Steinitzenalm. Continue straight ahead to the junction with the hiking trail to Hochmühleck. After the highest point, there is a not too steep descent. A short climb after the barrier leads to the last steeper descent, which leads down into the valley to Ödenseestraße.
In the district of Kainisch, the Ödenseer Traun river is crossed at the Austrian Federal Forestry Office's fish farm. Before the railway crossing, the route branches off to the right onto the R19 Salzkammergut Cycle Path. This leads via Mühlreith, past the Stieger snack bar with its petting zoo and fish pond, to the railway crossing in Knoppen.
Since 2023, a newly built cycle path south of the parish church of Maria Kumitz has led past Obersdorf. Under the underpass, the route changes to the Laasenweg, which leads to the Eselalm and Steirerhütte. After the campsite, keep left to return to the center of Bad Mitterndorf.
This mountain bike tour in the Ausseerland region combines scenic highlights, moderate inclines, and rewarding places to stop for refreshments. Ideal for enjoyable mountain biking in Bad Mitterndorf.
