The Salzkammerweg, which is around 48 kilometres long, is a circular hiking trail in Ausseerland and Inner Salzkammergut, which circles the Hoher Sarstein and offers a journey through centuries and millennia. The route is divided into several themed stages and leads to places of cultural and historical significance, geological features and impressive natural landscapes.
Stages of the Salzkammerweg
- Koppenrast to Hotel Wasnerin: "Path through the wilderness"
- Hotel Wasnerin to Waldgraben: "Historic salt trail"
- Waldgraben to Kriemoos: "Roman path"
- Kriemoos to Au: "Goiserer Almweg"
- Au to Koppenrast: "World Heritage"
The trail is well marked, often with information boards on historical, geological or agricultural topics and can be walked in several stages thanks to the connection to public transport. An optional boat trip on Lake Hallstatt rounds off the experience.
From Bad Aussee railway station, follow the Koppental signposts over the railway crossing, past the power station and the sewage treatment plant to the footbridge over the Koppentraun. The trail then climbs through the forest to the village of Sarstein.
Above the "Sarsteinrast", follow the road towards Hotel Die Wasnerin, then continue along Sommersbergseestraße to Fischgasse, past the Mayerlsiedlung, along the "Via Artis" to Lenauhügel. From there in the direction of Alpengarten, via the former Tannenwirt inn to Salzkammergut Straße B145, along a forest path to the village of Lichtersberg.
Via the waterfall path to the Schlosswiese with a possible detour to the Pflindsberg ruins, then on the "Via Salis" through the Langmoos, on to the settlement of Waldgraben. On forest paths and narrow paths over the Michlhallbach to the Halleralm, past the Flohwiesen, over the Steinhüttenalm to the Schwarzenbachloch (karst spring).
Via the Hütteneckweg to Kriemoos, then through Rehkogl, Kogl and Herndl to St. Agatha (Bad Goisern). Continue through Reitern, on the main road to Au, from there onto the Arikoglstraße and to the Hallstätter-Ostuferweg.
This runs via Obersee to the Obersee railway station, then continues over footbridges, bridges and paths to the Hallstatt railway station, past Grub Castle to Obertraun.
Shortly before the village, climb up to the Lichtstein, then via the high trail no. 1 through the Sarsteinwald forest to Koppenstraße, over the Traunbrücke bridge to Koppenrast and the Koppenbrüllerhöhle cave. From there, take the Koppental hiking trail through tunnels and along the Koppentraun river to the suspension bridge, over serpentines uphill back to Sarstein and the starting point at Bad Aussee railway station.
