The Art Trail Seckau – a project by Heribert Nothnagel

The Art Trail in Seckau is a unique art project initiated by the Seckau artist Heribert Nothnagel. Nothnagel, born in Seckau, attended the local abbey high school and completed his artistic education at the Ortweinschule under Alexander Silveri. He then studied sculpture under Fritz Wotruba at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.

As a longtime teacher – from 1973 at the Abbey High School Seckau and from 1980 to 2008 at the Ortweinschule – Nothnagel influenced numerous students, many of whom are now internationally recognized artists.

The expansion of the Art Trail Seckau took place in 2008 in collaboration with students from the Ortweinschule. For the sculptures, predominantly stone was used as a durable material, along with metal and plastic. Under the theme “The Plastic Fragment”, artworks emerged that suggest riddles and challenge the imagination of the viewers.

The sculptures and installations blend into the natural surroundings and are deliberately exposed to the influences of wind, weather, and time. As a result, they bear visible traces of change – an artistic reference to the transience and constant transformation that everything is subject to.
