Hohentauern

Hohentauern lies at an altitude of 1.274 metres and is the smallest municipality in Styria with just under 400 inhabitants.

The municipality of Hohentauern was established in 1849/50. During the 2013-2015 municipal structure reform in Styria, it was one of the few that were not united into one large municipality and has since been the smallest municipality in Styria with 391 inhabitants.

For almost 150 years, the three mines of magnesite, graphite and chlorite shaped events in Hohentauern. The years 1994 and 1997 brought the end of the era of graphite and magnesite mining. In order to preserve the history of the miners in the consciousness of the people, former miners created a room of remembrance. Under the expert guidance of an architect, the mining museum was set up in the Hohentauern community center. The philosophy of the museum is to present mining as a kind of "working and living space" within the other living spaces.

The parish of Hohentauern, previously a branch of St. Lorenzen im Paltental, was established in 1892. The municipal coat of arms was awarded to the municipality of Hohentauern with effect from January 1, 2015.
