Mur riverside path to Wöll

A leisurely hike for the whole family along the Mur river bank in the municipality of St. Georgen ob Judenburg.
This leisurely hike takes you through the Mur floodplain area in the municipality of St. Georgen ob Judenburg. The Mur is the main river in Styria and has its source at around 1900 meters above sea level in the Ankogel group in Salzburg's Lungau region. By the time it reaches St. Georgen ob Judenburg, the river has already descended 1200 meters in altitude. The historical name of the municipality is Praitenfurt, which suggests that the Mur was once fordable. If you hike along the Murauenweg trail, you can feel the tranquillity on the one hand and the power of the Mur on the other, while enjoying the wide valley floor far away from traffic. This easy and scenic hike is also attractive for children thanks to the rest and play facilities. After the hike, a delicious "Murtal ice cream", which you can enjoy in the village center at the ice cream factory, should be a fixed component. Conclusion: A family-friendly hike with a sweet ending.

More information

From Judenburg via the B317 (14 km, approx. 15 minutes)

From Murau via the B96 (26 km, approx. 30 minutes)

From the village square in St. Georgen ob Judenburg, we walk to the traffic circle and then downhill through the village. After just a few minutes, we see the yellow signposts on the right at a crossroads and turn off here. We follow the side road, which passes below the church and continues slightly downhill across the meadows to the Mur. Once we reach the banks of the Mur, we follow the gravel road downstream and reach a small bridge. We then pass a rest area with play and fitness facilities. We continue straight ahead - always along the bank - until the path on the right leads slightly uphill along the Wöllbach stream. After a short while, we come to a road, which we follow uphill to the water wheel in Wöll, and thus to the turning point of the hike. The way back is via the outward route.
In the summer months, you should take a picnic blanket with you to enjoy the flowing water and the floodplain landscape of the Mur during a leisurely break.
