HWW-Hiking route: St. Ilgen - Koglerauerhof - St. Lorenzen/Wechsel - Hochwechsel
This HWW hiking route is part of the Wechselland Historical Long-Distance Hiking Trail (HWW), which tells the story of Wechselland along more than 100 HWW stations. More information can be found at www.wechsel-wandern.at.
This extensive HWW hiking route from St. Ilgen, the lowest point in Wechselland, to the highest mountain in Wechselland. From St. Ilgen you have a beautiful view of the Hochwechsel. Along the HWW hiking route, you pass the Koglerauerhof HWW station, where you can learn that a medieval fortification once stood above the Koglerauerhof.

Arrival by car - from Vienna
- Take the A2 Süd highway in the direction of Graz.
- Exit Pinggau-Friedberg: Take exit 95 Pinggau-Friedberg and turn right onto the B54 Wechsel Straße in the direction of Hartberg.
- B54 Wechsel Straße: Follow the B54 for about 15 km in the direction of Hartberg until you drive through the villages of Pinggau and Lafnitz.
- Turn off to St. Ilgen: After the village of Lafnitz, turn left onto the L408 Lafnitzer Straße and follow the road to St. Ilgen.
- Arrival in St. Ilgen: After about 4 km you will reach St. Ilgen.
Arrival by car - from Graz
- Highway A2: Follow the A2 in the direction of Vienna.
- Exit Hartberg: Take exit 115 Hartberg and turn left onto the B54 Wechsel Straße in the direction of Hartberg.
- Through Hartberg: Follow the B54 for about 10 km until you reach Hartberg. Drive through the town and follow the signs towards Lafnitz.
- Continue on the B54: Stay on the B54 and pass the towns of Grafendorf and Lafnitz.
- Turn off to St. Ilgen: After the village of Lafnitz, turn right onto the L408 Lafnitzer Straße and follow the road to St. Ilgen.
- Arrival in St. Ilgen: You will reach St. Ilgen after about 4 km.
The tour is not signposted throughout. Route guidance with app recommended.
- Starting point: St. Ilgen.
- Follow the path through Lafnitz and Rohrbach in the direction of Jausenstation Uhl.
- Continue along the hiking trail to St. Lorenzen/Wechsel.
- From St. Lorenzen/Wechsel, the trail leads via the Glatzl Trahütten Alm to the Hochwechsel.
- Destination: Hochwechsel, where the hike ends and a magnificent view of the surrounding area awaits.
We recommend stopping off at the Glatzl Trahütten Alm or the Vorauer Schwaig and enjoying the view.
