Eastern Styria’s alpine atmosphere

Nature park Almenland

From Pernegg im Murtal to Koglhof im Feistritztal, from Schöckl to Rennfeld: Eastern Styria is home to Europe’s largest contiguous and farmed alpine grazing region.

125 alpine pastures are farmed between the Tyrnauer Alm, Teichalm, Sommeralm and Brandlucken. Most of them over generations and centuries. Alpine pastures are nature reserves of a special kind, shaped by animals and humans through agriculture. Around 3000 oxen, cows and calves graze the alpine pastures of the Almenland Nature Park. Not only do they maintain the meadows with their diversity of species, they also supply the popular ALMO beef.

The Almenland is a single, vast alpine garden with a varied landscape. From the craggy cliffs in the Bärenschützklamm and on the Hochlantsch, to the gentle meadow orchards around Fladnitz and Passail to the south. In the middle, an extensive high plateau with the dark blue Teichalmsee. The flora and fauna are just as diverse: Pheasant and wood grouse, hazel hens and weasels, ibexes and golden eagles, colourful butterflies and orchids are frequently encountered on the Teichalm moor and along the magnificent panorama hiking trails.

The greatest treasures...

...of the Almenland are jewels of nature, places of power and natural beauty that have emerged from interactions of nature and people over the course of centuries! These jewels exhibit the beauty and uniqueness of the nature park, which you can experience on a simple hike.

Here you will also find our friend the ibex. With extremely strong legs and hooves, the ibex climbs steep mountain faces confidently. Hikers can encounter these fascinating animals around the Hochlantsch and the Rote Wand.
