The market municipality of Grafendorf bei Hartberg is located in the eastern Styria hill country at the foot of the Masenberg. The market community with the six cadastral communities of Erdwegen, Grafendorf, Gräflerviertel, Safen, Seibersdorf and Stambach is rich in cultural attractions. The approximately 4,500 hectare municipal area is located at an altitude of 300 to 1,250 metres above sea level. Nestled in a wooded landscape of hills and pastures, Grafendorf is one of the traditional holiday and excursion areas of southern Wechselland.
At the agricultural and forestry school in Kirchberg am Walde, young people are optimally prepared for the professions of farmer and many other occupations in rural areas. The Museum of Rural Culture shows changes in the life of farmers, the structural change in agriculture as well as the settlement of Grafendorf during the time of the Romans. The Formbacherland loop tour, which runs past the 3 castles of Aichberg, Kirchberg am Walde and Reitenau, offers a different impression of the wonderful region during every season. Johann Cyriak Hackhofer, the well-known Vorau monastic painter, created an impressive dance of the dead depiction in the cross chapel in 1724.
