The Rein Abbey is the oldest continuous Cistercian monastery in the world. The monks have been "praying and working" here since 1129. From Rein, it is just a few kilometres to the impressive pilgrimage church of Maria Straßengel. It is one of the most important churches in the Austrian High Gothic style.
In Gratwein-Straßengel, there are of course plenty of secular pleasures: for example, sunbathing, swimming and relaxing in Bad Weihermühle. In winter, the swimming lake (depending on the right temperatures) is converted into a particularly beautiful ice rink. Around the Rein Abbey, there are great forest paths for walks, hikes and cycling, such as on the Mur cycling path or the Styrian Wine Country Cycling Tour, which also run through the town. Depending on your mood and fitness level, as a hiker you can also choose between comfortable loop hikes or somewhat longer trips, such as on the Pleschkogel hill.
