The “Tour de Lur” e-bike route connects the Lurgrotte caves in Peggau and Semriach, linking the vibrant Mur Valley with the high plateau of Semriach, north of the Schöckl. This scenic tour impresses with wide-reaching views, beautiful landscapes, welcoming inns, and Austria’s largest dripstone cave.
Peggau is an ideal starting point for this tour – easily accessible via the Murradweg or by S-Bahn, which also allows bicycle transport. The route begins on the eastern (left) bank of the Mur River, heading south. After turning off onto the quiet Hieningstraße, the path winds through the forest and up a series of switchbacks, climbing around 400 meters in elevation to reach a lush high plateau. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Schöckl and the Graz mountain region.
The market town of Semriach invites you to take a break with its charming main square, impressive parish church, and cozy cafés. A detour to the fascinating Lurgrotte Semriach is well worth it – be sure to bring a jacket for your visit to the cool dripstone cave.
The route continues to the traditional inn “Häuserl im Wald.” From there, the trail descends via quiet and sometimes steep paths down to Frohnleiten, also known as the “City of the Golden Center.”
In Frohnleiten, the Volkshauspark is the perfect spot for a relaxing break. The return to Peggau follows the eastern branch of the Murradweg. Alternatively, you can explore the Lurgrotte in Peggau, offering a fascinating look into prehistoric times – including cave bear remains, a mammoth tusk, and plants that grow without sunlight.
