    The Mur cycle path

The Mur cycle path R2 is arguably the most varied riverside cycle trail of the Alps. Starting at Hohe Tauern National Park in the SalzburgerLand region, it winds its way along the river Mur all the way to the Styrian wine and spa country in the border triangle of Austria, Slovenia and Hungary.

In between, you can find a myriad of highlights. For instance, the Graz Region with the provincial capital of Styria, located roughly at the path’s halfway point. Apart from that, many other spots across the province invite you to get off your bike and take a little break.

The best thing about it: You don’t even have to make a detour to see most of the region’s best attractions as most of them are located right along the route.

The top attractions along the Mur cycle path

    • Coming from the north, you can see the distinctive “skyline” of the picturesque town of Frohnleiten from afar. Another sight to behold is nearby Rabenstein Castle.
    • The Austrian open-air museum of Stübing is perfect for leisurely strolls through the whole of Austria.
    • Another worthwhile excursion from the Mur cycle path is Rein Abbey, the oldest extant Cistercian monastery in the world. Marvel at the baroque beauty of the basilica and get a little blessing from above for the rest of your ride.
    • Austria’s largest stalactite cave, Lurgrotte Peggau, is a unique natural wonder.
    • In Graz, the “capital of delight”, you can enjoy the pleasant contrasts of the medieval World Culture Heritage old town and the city’s futuristic architecture. Schlossberg mountain, many museums, theatres and other highlights make Graz a popular stop along the way.
    • Do you feel like taking a dip? Lake Schwarzlsee and the Copacabana in the south and many other public pools and swimming lakes along the way (Tieber Recreation Centre, Frohnleiten Recreation Park) invite you to do just that!
    • At Austrian Sculpture Park you can see 70 sculptures perfectly blending in with nature and their surroundings. A great spot for a nice walk or a relaxed picnic!
