Traffic rules for cyclists

In road traffic, it is especially important for cyclists to be well informed about the traffic rules. In addition, there are some specific rules for cyclists that ensure more safety in general.

Cyclists have priority on cycling facilities (cycle paths, footpaths and cycle tracks, cycle lanes, multi-purpose lanes, cyclist crossings). When leaving these facilities, other road users have priority over cyclists.
When crossing a protected path, care must be taken to ensure that no one is endangered. Pedestrians always have priority, as do rail and emergency vehicles.
Cyclists are allowed to cycle against a one-way street if an additional sign permits it. In pedestrian zones, cyclists are only allowed to cycle if there is an additional sign. Cycling is not allowed on pavements.
Do not forget: When cycling in the dark, the bicycle must be illuminated by a white front light and a red rear light.
Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to cycle without a supervisor (at least 16 years old). However, it is possible to take a cycling test from the age of 10.
Some guidelines must also be observed when taking a child on a bicycle with you. A maximum of one child may be carried on a bicycle and this child must be under eight years old (exception: special permit). The child seat must be fastened behind the saddle and equipped with a belt system that is difficult to open for children. The cyclist must be at least 16 years old.
The Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (Road Safety Board) prescribes a minimum level of safety equipment for our bikes, non-compliance is punishable by fines.
And one more thing: please never ride without a bicycle helmet! In Austria, children up to the age of 12 are required to wear a bicycle helmet.
