From the Hohen Tauern mountains to the Wine Country

A journey along what is probably the most varied river cycle path in the Alpine region. Mountains and alpine pastures in the north, vineyards and river wetlands in the south, and in between Graz, the Capital of Culinary Delights with its UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the historic city centre and Eggenberg Castle.

From Sticklerhütte to St. Michael im Lungau

The first stage of your cycle tour takes you to St. Michael im Lungau. Before you jump into the saddle, we recommend a hike to Brunnwand, where you can enjoy the serene atmosphere of the crystal-clear origins of the river Mur.

From St. Michael im Lungau to Murau

This stage is all about wood in its different shapes and sizes. Once you have reached the medieval brewing town of Murau with its impressive castle, it’s time to sit down with a cool pint of Murauer beer and expand your vocabulary. For instance, do you know what “Heihitt‘n” or “Hoanz’n” mean?

From Murau to Judenburg

This stage is full of historic and contemporary highlights. During the first part of this stage, you cycle along the Mur Valley Railway. There are plenty of rewarding side trips, for instance to the local ruins, the fairytale forest or to one of Europe’s most state-of-the-art planetariums.

From Judenburg to Leoben

A leisurely ride along the Mur takes you to Leoben, passing by the Red Bull Ring and lots of well-kept Old Towns with bustling pedestrian zones. At Göss Abbey, you can follow in the footsteps of famous politicians and taste the popular Gösser beer which was already served during the signing of the Austrian state treaty.

From Leoben to Graz

This section of the cycle path is characterised by unspoilt natural habitats and romantic towns such as Bruck an der Mur or Frohnleiten. Your destination is the provincial, cultural and culinary capital of Graz, with its Mediterranean atmosphere and distinctive clock tower perched up on Schlossberg mountain.

From Graz to Leibnitz

This route gets you in the mood for the upcoming wine roads in southern Styria. If you would like to visit Europe’s highest-located wine village, leave the main route at Leibnitz and stop for a break at Kitzeck.

From Leibnitz to Bad Radkersburg

Accompanied by the murmuring water of the Mur, this section of the route takes you past the fields and lowland forests of the Unteres Murtal Biosphere Reserve on to the romantic spa town of Bad Radkersburg.

From Bad Radkersburg to Legrad

The last stage of the cycle path is no less impressive. The distance of 100 kilometres is perfect for two days of cycling. This leaves you with enough time to savour the fertile fields, fragrant meadows, vines and fruit orchards that line the way to Legrad.
