In the summer of 1791, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart received the mysterious commission to compose a requiem - a work that was to become his musical legacy. The composer's early death on December 5 of the same year prevented the mass from being completed. His pupil Franz Xaver Süßmayr took on this task and completed the work in deep reverence for his teacher. To this day, Süßmayr's version is the best known. It convinces not through spectacular interventions, but through clever restraint. The Requiem tells of death, the Last Judgement and human pleas for mercy in haunting sound images. It is not intended to frighten, but to exhort - to repent, to hope and to prepare for the light of eternity.
