The Capuchin Crypt, burial place of the Austrian emperors, is a symbol of the former Danube monarchy. Joseph Roth's novel, published in 1938, is set shortly before, during and after the First World War; it ends with the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich in 1938. The main characters are members of the Trotta family, who were uprooted and left destitute in the general upheaval after the war in 1918. This was preceded by a rise over several generations for the Trottas, which led from Sipolje in Slovenia via the Austro-Hungarian army to the sphere of power of Emperor Franz Joseph and Archduke and heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand. The narrator, however, who reports on his life outside these aristocratic circles and his way out of the world, defies the times, desperate, hopeless and touching.
Johannes Silberschneider was born on December 13, 1958 in Mautern, Styria. He studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. He has subsequently appeared in numerous theater, television and cinema productions. Silberschneider develops his characters with his precise ideas and personal stubbornness. The individuality that is thus transferred to his characters characterizes his work, on stage, in film and in radio plays. He sees language as a medium of poetry; for him, texts are “language scores”, music to be “sung”.
Silberschneider is one of the most dazzling and versatile artists in the German-speaking world.
Born in Mautern in upper styria, the actor has worked in all major theaters and has appeared in over 100 television productions and feature films to date.
