Copper show mine Radmer

Radmer

In years of painstaking manual labour, we have awakened from its slumber a part of that Radmer mining history that came to an end 150 years ago and shaped our valley for almost 3000 years. The result of our efforts will impress you. Not only can you expect particularly personal attention from us, but you will also experience medieval copper mining at first hand. We cater to our visitors in every respect. You decide when you want to visit us and we will make sure that a knowledgeable guide is available to answer your questions according to your interests.

Copper ore was mined in Radmer as early as the Bronze Age, 3000 years ago. From 1547 to 1855, extensive copper mining was carried out in Hinterradmer, which in its heyday was one of the four most important mines in the Alpine region.

Up to 700 miners were employed in a total of 60 mines to extract the copper ore. In 1996, some Radmer mining enthusiasts began to revive the "Alten Paradeisstollen" (Old Tomato-Adit), which had already been shut down around 1800. In countless hours of voluntary work, a total of about 3,000 tonnes of rock have been removed so far without the use of machines. In addition, a second day exit had to be built for safety reasons. An extensive tunnel system consisting of roadways, shafts and mines has thus been made accessible to the public in its original state. Many visitors think it is one of Austria's most desolate exhibition mines. There is a guide for every eight visitors. A very personal mining experience is therefore guaranteed. A special highlight is the ride on Austria's smallest gallery railway through the hand-cut heritage gallery.
