KapfenbergSubscription concert series of the Kapfenberg Music School
The concert series consisting of a total of eight concerts begins with a chamber concert by the teachers of the music school on February 27. A special highlight will be the performance of guitarist Markus Illko. The musician from Kapfenberg has been living in Los Angeles for years, where he was awarded a Grammy this year in the category "Best Arrangement Instrumental".
The last concert of the season with the Big Band Kapfenberg once again emphasizes the close connection between the music school and the concert scene in Kapfenberg.

The flutist Stefan Gottfried Tomaschitz, originally from Leoben, is the soloist for the wonderful flute concerto in G major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. After studying in Graz, Vienna, and Weimar, he has been the principal flutist of the Vienna Symphony since 2018. Since 2020, he has been leading a flute class at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
The Peer Gynt Suites by Edvard Grieg from the theatrical music for the eponymous dramatic poem by Henrik Ibsen are among the most well-known orchestral pieces of romantic music.

OPAS DIANDL demonstrates how closely laughter and tears, joy and sorrow, homesickness and wanderlust are interconnected, and how much energy and inspiration these contrasts can ignite with their new program Riarn & Gspiarn (stirring and sensing for non-Tiroleans).
Since 2007, the quintet from South Tyrol has been exploring the playground of alpine music traditions and connecting them with all the ingredients packed in their backpacks: from Bach to bluegrass, from polka to punk, from contemporary yodeling to classical songwriting.

Experience the Grammy winner Markus Illko from Kapfenberg at an extraordinary concert evening that brings the fascinating world of solo guitar to life. With his masterful technique, deep musicality, and unmistakable style, Markus combines elements from jazz, classical music, and world music into a unique tapestry of sound.
In the second part of the concert, Markus Illko performs the solo part of the world-famous guitar concerto by Joaquin Rodrigo alongside the Symphonic Orchestra Kapfenberg.

Since 2017, Kapfenberg has been the annual host of the international master class for particularly gifted musical talents, “Gifted in Music” (GIM).
Lecturers from the University of Arts Graz teach selected youths from all across Europe. Around 30 youths and 8 teachers spend a week in Kapfenberg during the summer and give concerts of great interest at the beginning and end of the master class in the Performance Space of the music school. Young artists from “GIM 2024” have also been invited to perform as part of our concert series this year.

Matthias Bartolomey studied at the music universities in Vienna and Salzburg. Since 2020, he has been teaching as a university professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. In 2012, he founded the duo BartolomeyBittmann – progressive strings with violinist and mandolin player Klemens Bittmann.
Since 2010, he has been performing as a solo cellist with the ensemble for Early Music founded by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the Concentus Musicus Wien.
The Cello Concerto in B minor, Opus 104, by Antonín Dvořák is one of the most famous cello concertos and ranks among Dvořák’s most celebrated works. It is one of the most important pieces in the cello-repertoire and was composed in 1895 in the USA. Johannes Brahms is said to have exclaimed after reading the score: “Why did I not know that one can write a cello concerto like this? If I had known it, I would have written one a long time ago!”
