Altstadtrundgang von Kapfenberg
KapfenbergWalk through the historical center of Kapfenberg!
5000 years ago first traces of human settlement from the Neolithic Age have been found in the Rettenwandcave.
The first castle on the“Chaffenberch” certainly has been built in 1145.
In the year 1240 Kapfenberg has been raised to a market town. Most of the buildings around the old town square are certainly rom this time. The market town of Kapfenberg then developed into a safe haven for citizens being protected by the bends of the“Mürz River”.
It’s location along one of the most important routes from Vienna across the Semmering mountains towards the south of Austria made it one of the most important crossroads for transit travelers, providing customers from the craftsmen settled there.
Since the mid-19th century there was an industrial development of iron and steel production in Kapfenberg, primarily by the company Böhler.
In 1924 Kapfenberg received its status as a city and has developed into a mo- dern industrial city with high standard living.
