Bergwerksmuseum Montanarum
Neuberg an der MürzIn the small mining museum Montanarum in Altenberg an der Rax, the history of the ore mines around Altenberg is documented very vividly.
The museum presents objects from altenberg's mining past and documents very vividly the history of the two iron ore mines that were found on the Bohnkogel and Altenberger Erzberg. At its heyday in the second half of the 19th century, 182 people found employment in the mines. The number of inhabitants also rose from 300 to 857 during this time.
Initially, the iron ore was mined above ground from shallow pits (pingen), later tunnels were cut by hand with mallets and mountain iron, the total length of which was around 9,000 meters.
Due to exhaustion of ore reserves, operations were discontinued in 1893.
