Naturpark - Führung durch das "Münster Neuberg"

The impressive hall church - the Cathedral, now popularly referred to as the "Cathedral in the Village" - is a remarkable structure not only for art connoisseurs.

The church, like all Cistercian churches, is dedicated to the Coronation and Assumption of Mary. When Duke Otto the Merry intended to found a monastery in 1327, he was supported by the Cistercians of the Heiligenkreuz Monastery. Subsequently, the first uniformly Gothic hall church in Austria was constructed over a period of 169 years, featuring both nave and choir.               

Particularly noteworthy is the cloister of the cathedral, which is the only completely preserved Gothic cloister in Styria. The cloister, adorned with images of 38 abbots, is as worth seeing as the Renaissance high altar and the chapter room with the founder's crypt, where the mortal remains of Duke Otto the Merry and his family rest.

With the dissolution of the monastery by Emperor Joseph II in 1786, a varied monastery life came to an end after 469 years.
