Bergbaumuseum Fohnsdorf
FohnsdorfThe 300-year-old mining tradition characterizes the town of Fohnsdorf in the Murtal region.
The history of mining in Fohnsdorf dates back to 1670. The mining museum exhibits historical documents and showpieces that give you a vivid overview of mining in general and mining in Fohnsdorf in particular. On 1.000 m² of covered exhibition space and 5.000 m² of open-air grounds, visitors are immersed in the mysterious and dangerous world of the miners.
With a mining floor of 1.130m, Fohnsdorf was the deepest lignite mine in Europe and probably in the whole world. The highlight of the museum is the 3.600 hp twin-tandem steam engine of the main winding shaft and the 47 m high winding tower.
The competent guides, most of whom are former miners, make the guided tour of the museum informative and entertaining at the same time. More information on the homepage.
