Pfarrkirche Pöls
Pöls-OberkurzheimParish church in the centre of Pöls.
The parish church of Pöls has a long history that dates back to the year 757, when the church "ad Undrimas" was consecrated near the present location during the Christianization in Slavic Carinthia. This first church was destroyed around 770 during Slav uprisings.
The construction of the current church began around 1147 as a Romanesque pillar basilica. In the 14th century, a Gothic redesign took place with additions such as the long choir and the Anna Chapel. After being partially destroyed in 1480 due to a Turkish invasion, the church was expanded as a fortified church. In the 19th century, the Romanesque-Gothic appearance was restored, so that the church is now recognizable as a Romanesque-Gothic basilica.
