Stadtpfarrkirche St. Nikolaus Judenburg

Judenburg

In the town parish church of St. Nicholas in Judenburg in the Mur valley, several styles can be admired at once. Here, early Baroque meets late Gothic. The most precious piece of equipment of the church is the "Judenburger Madonna" from the years around 1420.

The town parish church in Judenburg in the heart of the Mur valley was named after St. Nicholas. The 3 large stained glass windows behind the magnificent altar show 3 scenes: St. Nicholas as the patron saint of travelers and sailors, the patron saint of children, and the patron saint of girls and women. The church was built in the early Baroque period as a pilaster church, was decorated with late Baroque carvings around 1420. After a fire in 1504 it was rebuilt with late Gothic elements. The most precious piece of the church is the "Madonna of Judenburg", created around 1420 by Master Hans. It is located in a small chapel to the left of the altar.

It is worth mentioning that the church in Judenburg does not have a directly adjacent church tower. As a bell and church tower here is a free-standing tower, the star tower Judenburg, which is considered the landmark of the city and the parish.
