SHORT DESCRIPTION OF THE PIECE
“Les Miserables” is a new musical production based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. With vigor, emotion, drama, intensity, and color, the life story of Jean Valjean and his antagonist, Inspector Javert, is brought to the stage.
Jean Valjean is released from prison. No house takes him in, only Bishop Myriel of Digne opens his door and treats him with respect. However, that night he steals silverware from his host and disappears. The thief is caught and presented to the bishop the next day. The bishop asks the gendarmes to release Jean Valjean, as he had “given” him the silverware. And to Jean Valjean: “My brother, you forgot to take the silver candlestick.”
This core experience moves Jean Valjean to change his life and become a good person. Will he succeed in putting his resolutions into action? Jean Valjean lives in a dramatic time, in an environment filled with misery, paired with a revolutionary spirit in Paris and confronted with various personal life and future scenarios.
Identitatively on the run for a lifetime, he tries to satisfactorily answer this final question internally: Should he stand by his true name, by his innermost SELF, even if he risks losing his dearest?
Jean Valjean and his fellow human beings are not isolated; two mysterious, opposing forces, associated with light and darkness, are at work in the background. They struggle in a tremendous battle for each individual, each soul, as well as for the future of humanity.
