Gallows Birkfeld
BirkfeldThe three pillars of the former Birkfeld gallows date back to the 17th century and form a fascinating relic. They are square, narrow towards the top and are arranged in an equilateral triangle.
The gallows forest in Birkfeld still holds stories today, including the consequences of a wrongful conviction during the Thirty Years' War. A vagrant was falsely accused and executed, which led to a devastating storm and the formation of the Schinaglgraben, which divided the village and made it uninhabitable for centuries. Today, only the gallows remain as a reminder of this dark episode in the past.
The building is protected under the Monument Protection Act.
