Discover a touching exhibition and talk on Western Sahara in the Graz Region.
On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 6:00 PM, the Afro-Asian Institute Graz invites you to a powerful event: Saharawis – 50 Years of Life in Refugee Camps. In the heart of the Graz Region, this exhibition and lecture offer deep insights into the lives of Saharawi people in Algerian refugee camps – a moving story of resistance and resilience from the Sahara to Styria.
Since 1975, around 170,000 Saharawis have been living in the harsh desert landscape of the Hamada in southwestern Algeria. Fleeing the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara, they have built their own autonomous community, known for its high literacy rates, strong solidarity, and cultural identity. This event highlights decades of perseverance and the ongoing struggle for self-determination.
• Lecture featuring first-hand accounts from Prof. Sidi Mohamed Ahmed Fatimatou and Ambassador Mohamed Slama Badi
• Conversation with curator Hubert Höllmüller
• Exhibition of personal memories from the camps and charcoal drawings by Edgar Sorgo
The vernissage takes place in the foyer of the Afro-Asian Institute (Leechgasse 24, 8010 Graz). The exhibition runs until June 9, 2025, and is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Experience stories of survival, art, and hope – right here in the Graz Region.
