Parapluie - Impression #1

Parapluie

Graz

Between 1839 and 1841, Baron Ludwig von Welden had the previously barren Schlossberg transformed into a romantic landscape park. His plans included newly laid out walking paths and the erection of several decorative wooden buildings in the style of the time at designated vantage points. The now listed Parapluie, named after the French word for umbrella, is the last remaining building of its kind. Not far from it, a bricked-up crevice bears witness to the former Hermitage, a recluse’s retreat that was also imitated according to Welden’s plans in keeping with the Romantic spirit of the time. It complemented the park design in a decorative fashion.
