Castle Pöllau
PöllauJourney into the past in the Nature Park Pöllau Valley and book a guided tour of the castle.
At the center of Pöllau sits the castle and former Augustinian monastery. In 1482 Hans von Neuberg, the former owner of the castle and the market Pöllau, decreed in his will that the castle should be used as an Augustinian monastery. The monastery was finally established 22 years later. In the same year eight Augustinian canons under provost Ulrich moved from the monastery in Vorau to Pöllau. The monastery was altered and extended between 1677 and 1779. The layout of the church and the mighty dome was modelled after the famous St. Peter's Basilica - this is why locals call the building the "Styrian St. Peter's Basilica".
The monastery in Pöllau was closed down only six years later in the course of the Josephine Reforms and handed to the state. Despite that, the Augustinian canons were active for 300 years and made Pöllau the spiritual, cultural and economic center of the Pöllau Valley. Nowadays the castle is owned by the market town Pöllau. The parish church and the east wing belong to the diocese Graz-Seckau. The castle houses rooms for events like the large and small frescoe halls, the refectory, the music school Pöllau-Vorau-Joglland, the rehearsal rooms for the renowned local orchestra as well as the tourism office and much more.
The castle Pöllau with its inner courtyards can be viewed from the outside at any time. The inside can only be visited in the course of a guided tour.
This location is also perfect for celebrations of all kinds. For appointments please contact us directly.
"SAM" stands for "Sammeltaxi Oststeiermark" and closes the mobility gap where bus and train do not run. The SAM stop at the castle (north side) is HF 5943, other stops can be found here.
