Versuchsstation für Spezialkulturen
WiesHokkaido, Huckelberry, Kiwano or Pak Choi are the names of the strange vegetables grown at the Experimental Station for Special Crops in Wies, a research facility of the province of Styria. Strange things are measured and researched: the radius of curvature of cucumbers, for example, the firmness of tomato fruits or the formation of heads in lettuce. But visitors can also enjoy the fragrant sensuality of a garden with 160 small plots to look at and smell, taste and feel good, a feast for the eyes with a variety of vegetables, pumpkins, flowers and herbs.
The Experimental Station, an institution of the Province of Styria, has been engaged in practice-oriented experimental work for over 50 years. The investigations range from vegetable, garden and ornamental plant cultivation to the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic herbs in conventional and organic cultivation methods. The annually changing experimental setups can be visited from Monday to Friday from the beginning of May to the end of September.
