Wächterhaus und Römersteinbruch
WagnaThe Römerhöhle is an accessible mining gallery that houses a show exhibition on the 2000-year history of this oldest, still active mine in Austria. The focus is on the formation of the coral reef, the mine in Roman times and in the Middle Ages, the concentration camp of World War 2 and a peace tunnel. The guard house is also located in the immediate vicinity.
The quarry is located in southern Styria near Wagna, between Aflenz an der Sulm and Unterlupitscheni. The Aflenzer Stein (or Aflenzer Quader), a good building stone made of calcareous sandstone, is cultivated. Parts of the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, were built with Aflenzer stone.
The formation of the coral reef, the mine in Roman times and in the Middle Ages, the concentration camp of the Second World War and a peace tunnel are the focal points of the exhibition. Concerts and theater performances are also held in the gallery.
