Der bunteste Kirchturm der Welt
FeldbachBut why is it actually so colorful?
With a height of 72 meters and its unique colorfulness, the church tower of Feldbach cannot be overlooked. The tower, which was blown up on May 8, 1945, was replaced in 1963/64 by the present concrete church tower (designed by Eberhard Jäger). The tower was built in 26 days using the so-called "sliding formwork system", whereby work had to be carried out continuously day and night. Due to this then new technique, there are no joints, the surface is completely smooth.
The tower clock was the largest in Austria at that time. In 1988, the characteristic colorful painting was done according to the design of the artist Gustav Troger. The motto was "Many colors - one tower, many people - one parish". It was carried out with great participation of the population of Feldbach. The new church tower thus established itself as another landmark of the city of Feldbach.
In 2017, the 30th anniversary was taken as an opportunity to restore the church tower and let the colors shine bright and colorful again. Accompanied by the Federal Office for the Protection of Monuments and the Episcopal Building Authority, the largely regional companies started the work. According to Gustav Troger's specifications, 7000 color fields were painted with 38 different colors.
The church tower is the eye-catcher in the middle of the cultural and shopping city of Feldbach.
