The Ottersbach Mill
Mills have attracted people for centuries. While in the past it was the barter trade - grain was exchanged for flour for daily bread - today most of the mills are dilapidated and sad relics of the past. About 40 years ago, the mill was shut down for rationalization reasons, but in 2012 its "new life" began with extensive renovation work. In the meantime, it has been listed as a historical monument and was honored with the award of "Styrian Landmark" for its exemplary revitalization. Since 2014, the Ottersbachmühle has been open to visitors and mill enthusiasts. The Ottersbachmühle, which is around 400 years old, had 5 watercourses in its heyday and, with its oil mill, a sawmill and the miller's house opposite, is one of the last fully developed mills. From the outside, the mill appears to be two-story, but inside it has four stories with massive wooden supports. The original furnishings, such as the massive roller mill, have been preserved. The drive via the large water wheel with its transmission belts and shafts to the machines on all floors has also been preserved almost unchanged. The revitalization of the Ottersbach Mill makes the mystery of the "mill" accessible to people again and brings the history to life. Learning about the history of the mill, trying out miller's work and gaining insight into the hard work of bygone days is just a small part of the impressions we can take away from a visit to the mill.
