Silber circuit in Übelbach

Where once silver was mined, you can now jog, hike and stroll – and quench your thirst with some golden “barley juice”. Übelbach has changed from mining silver to brewing gold.
The Übelbach Silberweg – the name recalls the importance of silver mining in the past – is a leisurely walk around the town. You can also walk just parts of the Silberweg as it can be joined from Alter Markt (old market) at several points.

More information

By train: from Bruck/Mur or Graz via Peggau–Deutschfeistritz to Übelbach railway station (S11). By car/motorbike: via the A9 (exit Übelbach) or via the L385 to Übelbach. By bike: on the Mur (R2) cycle path to Deutschfeistritz and then along the L385 to Übelbach.
Our starting point is at the S-Bahn (S11) railway station in Übelbach. From there, the trail is marked throughout with silver-grey arrows. Go north to the old market and up the Kalvarienbergstrasse. Turn left just before the end of the road onto the hiking trail. After a short climb, turn left again, following the arrows, past the “Sängerplatzl” over the small bridge and into the Schörgleitengraben.

Going down, the trail leads you under the L385, over the bridge that crosses the Übelbach stream, and into the Sperbergraben. Go briefly uphill, turn left and pass under the motorway bridge. Follow the gravel road to the Vinzenz promenade turnoff and continue through the forest to the Niesengraben.

After crossing the municipal road, follow the trail along the slope to the motorway bridge and enjoy the magnificent view over the whole valley. Continue to the small Warthkogel housing estate. At the end of the estate turn left onto the little road, then left again and over the motorway bridge. Now the trail goes uphill a bit before you bear left and walk along the edge of the forest in the direction of Köppelgraben. Then simply go on to the old market, where you’ll find several places to eat as well as the train station, the starting point of the tour.

Find out more about the subject of water on the 5 km long Übelbach Water Theme Path (Wasserthemenweg) with its 14 informative panels.
Hikers can easily arrive without a car by using bus or train services. The frequent S1 trains between Graz and Bruck/Mur make reaching OberGraz easy. From Peggau–Deutschfeistritz railway station, take the S11 train or the GUSTmobil minivan to Übelbach.

Parking is available on Alter Markt in Übelbach or alongside the L385, just east of the Kletzenbauer garage.
In the idyllic Übelbach market you’ll find plenty of places to eat, for example the Grossauer brewery, the Zur Sonne inn and Marktcafé Übelbach. You can also enjoy traditional cuisine at the Altes Hammerherrenhaus inn just outside the centre of Übelbach.

The largest beer mug in the world can be seen in the pub garden of the Grossauer brewery in idyllic Übelbach. With a height of 7 metres and weighing 3 tons when empty, it can hold around 11,200 litres of barley juice. It took the members of the Leitnbierclub no less than 1,790 working hours to make this giant vessel out of 150-year-old larch wood, fibreglass and steel. In 2009 the mug was recognized as a world record.
