Because of its romantic location, Pürgg was once described by Styrian folk poet Peter Rosegger as the “Nativity scene of Styria”, an ensemble that includes St. George’s Parish Church, a mountain cemetery and charnel house as well as St. John’s Chapel with its Romanesque 12th cent. frescoes, standing just above Universalmuseum Joanneum at Schloss Trautenfels.
Two swimming pools in Stainach and Pürgg, with marvelous views of the Grimming, invite you to absorb the rejuvenating summer atmosphere. The network of hiking paths and mountain trails extends seemingly forever. The Burgstall practice climbing area is a magnet for outdoor sports fans.
Spechtensee, a mountain lake circumnavigated by a beautiful hiking path, and the Spechtensee Hut operated by the Alpine Association are both special tips for nature lovers.
In winter, the Spechtensee tow lift and a cross-country ski trail in Wörschachwald are both close by.
