Start directly in the village of Tauplitz at the church. Follow trail no. 6 to the east. Cross the bypass road and walk past the small chapel in the direction of "Leinsteg". After the bridge turn right and always uphill past the farms "Gasteiger" and "Lurger". Continue along the asphalt road until you reach the "Gewessler", the highest farm.
Now follow the markings in the direction of Gwendlingstein. It is somewhat faster to reach the summit via the southern ascent. However, this is also more strenuous and steeper. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you should follow the "normal route" to the Gwendlingstein.
Via the west ascent you reach the 1814 m high Hechlstein. However, the path is only advisable for experienced climbers, because it is steep, rocky and partly unsecured. Once at the summit, you are rewarded with an incredible view of the surrounding mountains.
Continue east on trail no. 297. Via the farms "Ernst" and "Hechl" you come back to the "Gewessler" and follow the path back to the starting point in Tauplitz.
