On the Backenstein and to the Appelhaus

The Backenstein (1,772 meters) is the local mountain of Grundlsee and bears its name because of its striking shape from the view of the village of Grundlsee. The summit cross is located slightly lower than the highest point because of the visibility from the valley and the view.
An extended mountain tour with summit experience. The ascent over the Almberg is to be classified as rather arduous.

The time required for the detour from the path to the Appelhaus to the summit is about one hour. The Albert Appelhaus is a very comfortably equipped refuge and starting point for many high altitude tours in the Tote Gebirge.

The journey to Grundlsee is best planned with google.at/maps
The hike starts in the district of Rößlern and leads the first meters on the gravel road uphill until the Alpine Trail 235 branches off. Follow the marked path uphill through the forest, cross the gravel road again and reach a resting bench below a small rock face with a memorial, the "Schakeles".

Now you are at the entrance to the steeply ascending "Almberg". The path leads partly in rocky terrain, partly in scree. From the top of the Almberg you can once again enjoy a beautiful view down to the Grundlsee. From here, the trail leads to the Appelhaus for about 1 1/2 hours on the high plateau through varied terrain. But soon after the height, at a Gatterl, the path to the summit of the Backenstein branches off to the right. First quite steep through earthy terrain, later through mountain pines to the summit. To the summit cross one descends exceptionally.

Back on trail no. 235 to the Appelhaus, turn right and you will soon come to the junction of the unmarked trail to the Breitwiesenalm and later to a support of the material cable car that leads to the Appelhaus. Here the marked path to the Trisselwand and to Altaussee branches off to the left. After some time you reach the Brunnwiesenalm with its alpine huts and after another 20 minutes the Henaralm. On the right below the path is the self-catering hut of the Friends of Nature and above the alpine huts you can see the destination, the Albert Appelhaus.

The descent to the starting point is the same as the ascent - only the detour to the summit of the Backenstein is omitted.

As it is highly recommended the return path leads you through some mountain pastures, as it is the "Augstwiesalm", Hochkopfsattel" and "Oberwasser", and wealds back to the village Altaussee. Think of the necessity of a transport back to Grundlsee after you finished your tour.
