Haller salt nature trail

The very name HALL indicates the presence of salt. First mentioned in 931, the salt works were in operation from Hall until 1543. Grading plants originally served to increase the concentration of the salt water by trickling it over bundles of straw. The path to the Hall salt grading plant leads from the leisure park along the Eßling river into the Zirnitz and from there to the centre of Hall. Along the way there are 10 boards telling the history of salt.
The Haller salt nature trail reminds us of the important history of the place when salt was still being extracted here. Many names still indicate their former use, e.g. Sulzgraben, Oberpfanner, Unterpfanner, etc.

More information

from Admont: at the Ennsbrück roundabout take the Hall exit, after 1 km turn left into the Hall leisure park car park
We start the leisurely family hike at the amusement park in Hall, the children can already let off steam at the various playground equipment before we start on the Waldsteig along the Eßling. Theme boards tell about the history of Hall, which has always been connected with salt production. Fauna and flora along the way are also included on the information boards. Where a meadow borders the path on the right, we make a short detour and climb the steps to a small wooden viewing platform. The semicircular arena of the Haller Walls with Scheiblingstein, Kreuzmauer, Hochturm, Kesselkargrat, Hexenturm, Naterriegel and Mittagskogel is in front of us and we enjoy the breathtaking view into the rocky scenery. Then we disappear again into the forest and soon reach a small grading facility. We open the door and press the switch on the left side. Already the salt water starts trickling over the fir brushwood, we sit down on the bench and breathe deeply in and out. This is balm for our lungs and many a cold can be cured here. Then we enjoy the sun on the benches at the place in front of the grading plant, always the food within reach, so that the children can play at the brook before we leave again. The path soon leads to a meadow and finally we come to an asphalt road. Now we keep to the right and cross the Zirnitzstraße at the sports field (refreshment point Sportplatzstüberl). Cross the valley across the open fields until you come back to the village road near the outdoor swimming pool, which takes you right back to your starting point. On the way we pass the Sulzgraben, here was one of the salt springs, the Kirchenwirt Hall (excellent cuisine), the Haus Unterpfanner, here was a brew pan, and finally the Gemeindeamt Hall. Here we can get an overview of our round trip on the local map, then we march along the village street back to the leisure park.
Hall is also a fantastic cross-country skiing area in winter, awarded the Styrian cross-country seal of approval.
