Precisely because the pilgrimage site is located on the mightier rock on the eastern side of the valley, Maria Freienstein can be called a spiritual gateway to the "Iron Road".
This special place is located 70 m above the Vordernberg valley, which has been characterized by ore mining, iron extraction and iron processing for many centuries.
